40th Reunion highlights

There was a great turnout: 82 members of the class, four spouses who are Carleton alums from other classes, 27 spouses/partners/friends, and three children.

Carleton presented awards to three members of our class:

  • Exceptional Service: Jim Johnson
  • Distinguished Achievement: Marlou Garbisch Johnston and (posthumously) Minor Myers Jr.

It was impressive how much of the whole multi-class reunion was fueled by the talents of the Class of 1964. Examples include:

  • Donna Dennis’ slide show and discussion of her sculpture career, and exhibition of some of her work on paper
  • A spirited interchange on party and presidential politics guided by Jim Ulland and featuring Dave Beckwith (on speakerphone from DC), with audience response (featuring John McAuliffe)
  • A panel of a handful of us talking about our individual retirement and non-retirement transitions
  • A beautiful green campus, with a high note being Bardwell Smith’s discussion in the Japanese Garden
  • Rob Oden’s so-articulate commentary on the Ancient Near East
  • An elegant analysis of contrasting Civil War leadership styles in the pivotal battle of Petersburg by Dick Sommers
  • An art exhibit including works by Jill Mooney Campbell, Margie Skaggs, Donna Dennis, and David Powers
  • A book-signing by Marty Schotz, History Will Not Absolve Us, about conspiracy by the intelligence community to kill JFK
  • A concert featuring Marlou Garbisch Johnston and her sisters as well as Margee Moss Bracken (and other talents)
  • A one-man play with Dick Figge as John Barrymore.

CLASS OF 1964 GIFT TO THE CARLETON ALUMNI ANNUAL FUND

The final figures show that the Class of '64 raised $244,595 in gifts and pledges combined, from 266, or 82.1% of our class members. The gift was the third highest of all class gifts and our participation was the highest of all classes this year and the highest in nearly 20 years. Thanks to all for really helping Carleton.
